Adventures for free or almost free  in Key West

Biking

Key West MM 17 Sugarloaf Key (residential area) – You can park at the Sugarloaf Lodge and just across U.S. 1 is a great low traffic bike path with a round trip mileage of approximately 15 miles.
Key West MM 27.8 Middle Torch and Big Torch (natural area, some houses) – You can park in the gravel along Middle Torch Road just off U.S. 1.  Almost no traffic with nine turns, lots of wildlife.  Mileage is about 15.5 miles.

Bingo/Bridge

Key West Bingo at 801 Bar at 801 Duval St. 294-4737 – Bingo on Sunday at 4:30 p.m., no cover, proceeds go to local charities, come join the fun as drag queens call the shots.
Key West Bingo at Key West Senior Center, 1016 Georgia St. 995-5165.  Games played on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.  Cost is $3.00 per game.
Key West Bingo at American Legion, College Road, 294-7374.  Games are on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Bocce

Key West Indigenous Park on White and Atlantic Streets in Key West.  Monday through Thursday at 6:30 p.m.  Played seasonally, starting in February.

Classes

Key West Painting Classes MM 17 at Sugarloaf Lodge 745-3741.  Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., $15 a class taught by local artist, Jim Salem.  For more information, call Miriam at the Lodge.
Key West Salsa Dance Lessons at Paradise Health and Fitness, 1796 N. Roosevelt Blvd. 296-6348.  Friday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. for all levels.  Beginners Salsa Rueda from 9 to 10 p.m. on Friday.
Key West Florida Keys Discover lecture series.  Free programs about Keys history, arts, recreation, nature and culture:  April 13 at Pigeon Key.  Butterflies Take Wing in the Keys, video and lecture; April 17 in Key Largo, Historical and Natural Features of the Dry Tortugas, slide lecture.  Visit www.floridakeysdiscovery.org for more information.

Flea Market

Key West Big Pine Key just south of the only traffic light in town on U.S. 1 Open Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to noon: it’s free to browse.  Most active during season.

Galleries/Gardens

Key West Bougainvillea House Gallery, 12420 Overseas Highway in Marathon, 305-743-0808.  Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Housed in a historic Bougainvillea-covered house, this local artists’ co-op is a great place to browse through all types of creative medium (non-profit).
Key West Key West Botanical Garden on Stock Island off College Road on the right side just over the bridge.  This 11-acre, city-owned garden is opened from dawn until dusk and is free to the public.  A great place to take a tour, bird watch or just hang out and have a picnic.  On Saturday, volunteers are available to answer your questions.

Movies

Recreation

Key West MM 37 Bahia  Honda State Park, Big Pine, 305-872-2353 – Open daily at 8:00 a.m. to Sunset.  Cost: $1.50 per person for walkers or cyclists; $2.50 per person in a car; and children under six are free.  Marina, dive shop, cabins, camping, hiking, picnicking, and bird watching.
Key West Fort Zachary Taylor State Park at the west end of Southard Street, Key West, 305-292-6713.  Open 8 a.m. to sunset.  Admission fee is $1.50 per person for walkers or bikers and $2.50 per person in a car.  The fort was built between 1845 and 1866.  Tours are available.  This 87-acre park is great for beach fun, snorkeling and picnics.
Key West Sugarloaf Marina located next to the Sugarloaf Lodge, MM 17, 305-745-3135.  Open daily 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Their great prices include: Bikes for $3 a day, fishing rods for $5 a day, snorkel gear for $8 a day, kayaks for $25 for a half-day, and $35 for a full day and boat ramp fees of $5 per boat.  Backcountry charters are also available.
Key West Pigeon Key, MM 45, 305-743-5999 – Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pigeon Key Gift Shop on Knights Key (MM 47), where you board the train to take you down the old Seven Mile Bridge.  Of course, there is no better way see the wildlife like tarpon, sharks and stingrays, than by walking the old bridge, plus it’s free.  The cost for county residents for a train ride and tour of the old island is $6 for adults and $5 for children ages 7 to 12.  Children under seven are free.

Running

Key West Key West Southernmost Runner’s Club, 305-745-3027.  The club schedules weekly runs for fun or training purposes.  It’s open to anyone.
Key West Key West High School track at 5 p.m. Wednesday (at 4 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month). The focus is on running technique.
Key West Sugarloaf Sports and Fitness Center Saturday at 7:30 a.m., on Crane Blvd. For one to five mile run and stretch workout.

Skate

Key West YMCA Skate Park, 3145 Flagler St. (behind the fire station), 305-295-9622.  Two-hour skateboard or inline skate session for kids under 18 is $3.  Open every day but Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Key West YMCA Family Skate Night, 305-295-9622.  Held at hockey rink on Key West High School Grounds.  Skates only.  Open from 7 to 9:45 p.m.  Cost is $3 for children or adults.

Swimming

Key West Florida Keys Community College 305-296-9081, ext. 362.  Cost is $2 per day.  Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday through Thursday.  On Friday hours are 6:30 a.m. to noon and the pool is open on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.  Water is heated to 82 degrees and lifeguards are on duty.  Special swim team and swim lessons packages available.
Key West YMCA family swim at FKCC swimming pool, 305-295-9622.  Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.  Features Toy the Tanker a jungle gym for the pool.  Cost is $3 for adults and $2 for kids.

Tai-Chi

Key West Tai Chi for Inner Harmony on Sugarloaf Key Monday and Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Call Lydia at 305-745-2811.

Tennis

Key West Astro Park across from Higgs Beach.  Six unlighted courts. Always open.
Key West Bayview Park on Virginia Street in Key West, 305-294-1346.  Five lighted, hard surface courts.  Open from sunrise to 10 p.m.  There’s a pro shop and pros are available for lessons; this is a great place to hang out if your looking for a game.

Yoga & Exercise

Key West Yoga College of India, 812 Southard Street (upstairs in Old Harris School), 305-292-1854.  Classes are at 8 a.m., 4 and 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; at 8 and 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday; 8 and 10 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.  Wear light clothing and bring a large towel and water.  Cost is $9.  If it’s your first visit, please arrive 10 minutes early.  305-292-1854. 
Key West Yoga on the Beach ... Classes held at Ft Zachary Taylor State Park Mon through Sat at 8AM Nov - May. Call 305-296-7352 for current schedule. $15 drop in class includes admission to the park.

Key West Sunset at Mallory Square – Sunset hour varies with season; Tons of entertainment, no cost.
Key West Key West Library 700 Fleming St.  305-292-3595.  Children’s story hour on Tuesday and Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. and Summer Reading Program on Thursday and Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Free.
Key West Petting Zoo at the jail on Stock Island, 305-293-7300. Located at 5501 College Road. Open on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month from 1pm to 3pm. (subject to change during the holidays). Admission is free and donations are appreciated.
Key West Meetings of Key West Writers Guild, 305-296-3646.  Authors and aspiring authors, published and unpublished welcome at the meetings on the second and fourth Saturday of every month.  Meeting is from 10 a.m. to noon at Kelly’s Caribbean Bar, Grill and Brewery at 303 Whitehead St.
Key West Wildlife Rescue Center in Key West, 305-294-1441.  Come see the birds and other wildlife at the corner of White and Atlantic streets inside the McCoy Indigenous Park.  Admission is free (although donations to help the birds are needed).  Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Key West Key West Cemetery, at Frances and Olivia Streets in Old Town.  Take a self-guided tour through our burial ground. Plenty of history is revealed just by reading the tomb stones.
